KENT, Ohio – The Kent State soccer team (12-5-1, 8-2-0 MAC) fell 3-1 at the hands of the Bowling Green Falcons (11-5-1, 6-3-1 MAC) on Sunday afternoon at Dix Stadium. The match was tied early in the second period until Bowling Green, the highest scoring offense in the Mid-American Conference, netted two goals.
"It has to be a learning lesson for us, we have to build from here on out, and we have a lot ahead of us," said Kent State head coach Rob Marinaro. "It has to be the idea that this is a mistake we made on the day not the entire season. We need to regroup and make sure we bring back what makes us successful."
Bowling Green scored the first goal of the afternoon in the 37th minute, but the Golden Flashes tied the match in the 60th minute on freshman Isabelle Mihail's fourth goal of the season. She broke free down the middle of the field and beat the keeper going top self for the score. Fellow freshman Vital Kats recorded an assist for her team-leading 15th point.
"We came back to tie the game. From there we should have made some better decisions," said Marinaro.
The Falcons offense quickly struck back in the 69th minute on Chelsee Washington's second goal of the afternoon, when she scored from 15 yards out on a pass from Marissa Swindell.
Bowling Green tacked on an insurance goal in the 85th minute on Erica Hubert's goal six yards out from the left side. Nikhita Jacob and Marissa Swindell registered assists.
The Falcons led in shots (21-5) and shots on goal (13-5), while the Golden Flashes led in corner kicks (4-3).
Bowling Green goalkeeper Victoria Cope (10-5-0) allowed one goal and did not record any saves. Kent State's Katie Kingsbury (4-2) faced 21 shots, made 10 saves and allowed three goals.
The Golden Flashes allowed multiple goals in a match for the first time in conference play this season, and allowed more goals than all previous conference matches combined (2).
Kent State remains in first place in the MAC standings with 24 points, as second place Ball State (23 points) tied 0-0 with Akron.
The Flashes will battle Ohio on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. for the final regular season contest of the year. Kent State will host the MAC Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday Oct. 29 against a date and opponent to be determined.
