The Kent State women's basketball team concludes its three-game week in Northeast Ohio at the Akron Classic. The Golden Flashes are slated to take on Florida Gulf Coast on Friday at 5 p.m. and then Southeastern Louisiana at 12 p.m. Saturday inside of James A. Rhodes Arena.
Kent State (2-0) looks to win its first three games of the year for the first time since 2010-11, when they started 6-0. Stellar defense has been key in the first two games, as the Flashes are holding opponents to just 49.0 points per game on 30.7 percent shooting and forcing 20.0 turnovers per game.
After a slow offensive start Tuesday at Youngstown State, the Flashes scored 13 straight to go ahead in the third quarter and put the game away with a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter in the 55-44 victory. The Flashes' defense held the Penguins scoreless for 5:25 and 6:38, respectively, during those runs. This is the fewest points scored by a Kent State opponent since a 44-43 win over Bowling Green on January 15, 2011.
Junior Alexa Golden scored a career-high 17 points to lead Kent State and added seven rebounds, four steals and two assists. Graduate student McKenna Stephens also grabbed seven boards to share the team lead and added 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Senior Jordan Korinek contributed 10 points and four rebounds before fouling out in just 26 minutes of action.
