KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University field hockey team will defend its title on its home field, competing in the 2017 MAC Tournament at Muphy-Mellis Field Nov. 3-4.
Kent State enters the tournament as the second seed and will face third-seeded Longwood at 2 p.m. Friday. Opening the day will be top-seeded Miami against the fourth seed, Appalachian State, at 11:30 a.m. The winners will face off Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Flashes enter the tournament riding a four match winning streak. Kent State started its run by defeating Ball State, 2-1, on the road on Oct. 6 and have outscored opponents 13-3 since. Kent State has not lost a match since facing No. 4 Penn State on Oct. 1.
The recent win streak includes the only match this year against Longwood, a thrilling overtime win, 3-2. Kent State and Longwood were locked in a back and forth battle in which the Golden Flashes played from behind on multiple occasions. A winner could not be decided in 70 minutes, but a Berta Jover Llorens goal in the 73rd minute sealed the match.
Kent State is 1-1 against the other side of the bracket, falling in a razor thin match against Miami, 1-0, and earning a road victory over App State, 3-0.
The Flashes will be looking for their fourth straight MAC Tournament title, giving a championship to the senior class in every year. A fourth straight tournament victory would tie a record set by Ball State from 1983-86.
All four teams will be competing for an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. If Kent State comes out victorious, the selection show for nationals will be held Sunday evening at 10 p.m. The first round match will be played Wednesday, Nov. 8.
