Track and Field Poised for Indoor MAC Championships

Kent State's men's and women's track and field programs make their way to Ypsilanti, Mich. this weekend to contest for the Indoor MAC Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan. Action from Bowen Fieldhouse gets underway Friday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m.

FLASHBACK TO THE 2016 MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
At last year's MAC Championships, hosted by the Akron, Kent State's men's and women's programs each came away with third place finishes. The women's championship went to Eastern Michigan who scored a total of 127 points and the men's championship went the Zips who scored 145.50 points.
Four former Golden Flashes claimed individual event titles last year in William Barnes (200m dash, 60m hurdles), Roosevelt Dotson (high jump), Roseanne Erickson (long jump) and Donovan Tolbert (triple jump).
Gabrielle Figueroa captured second in the women's weight throw with a mark of 19.35m (63' 6"). In the men's long jump, Jonathan Grant took second with a jump of 7.54m (24' 9"), followed by Samory Fraga in sixth at 7.3m (23' 11.5").
AJ Stevens recorded a mark of 15.28m (50' 1.75") in the triple jump, taking third place, while Ryan Looser totaled 5,123 points to finish fourth overall in the heptathlon.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend the Golden Flashes hosted the Kent State Tune Up in preparation for this weekend's championships. Danniel Thomas stole show throwing 18.32m (60' 1.25") in the shot put, breaking the Jamaican national, the Kent State school record and the Kent State Fieldhouse record.
Swann Phelippeau won the women's 3,000m run, with a time of 10:02.32, the tenth-fastest time in Kent State history.
Reggie Jagers III won the men's weight throw with a career-best mark of 21.24m (69' 8.25"). Fraga set a personal-record in the long jump of 7.52m (24' 8.25"), as he took second place in the event.
RANKING THE GOLDEN FLASHES
• Heading into the MAC Championships, four Golden Flashes currently lead the conference in their respected events.
• Thomas' record in the shot put of 60' 1.25" leads the MAC by nearly four feet and currently ranks second in the nation.
• Jager's leads the MAC and sits at 17th in the country with his PR of 69' 8.25" in the weight throw.
• Figueroa is out in front of conference standings in the weight throw with a season-best mark of 19.88m (65' 2.75") which came at EMU's Bowen Fieldhouse earlier this season.
• TJ Lawson's school record in the heptathlon of 5,666 points leads the MAC and ranks 13th in the nation. Kent State currently holds the top three heptathlon scores in the conference as Ryan Looser ranks second (5,287 points) and Mitchell Kubicki ranks third (4,853 points).

Kent State's athletes that finish in the top-16 nationally in their respected events will qualify for the 2017 NCAA Indoor National Championship which will be hosted by Texas A&M March 10-11.
