
Vodan Wins Javelin in Debut for Women’s Track and Field

AKRON, Ohio – Vanessa Vodan, a member of Kent State's softball team and now a member of the women's track and field team as well, took first-place in the women's javelin Saturday at the Campbell-Wright Open.
Vodan showed continuous improvement in her first collegiate track and field meet, throwing 29.62m (97' 2") on her first attempt before reaching 40.37m (132' 5.25") on her sixth attempt to win the competition. Vodan's mark currently ranks seventh in the Mid-American Conference, just one week away from the conference championships.
Cayla Carey also secured a victory for the Golden Flashes Saturday, winning the 100m dash with a time of 12.24 seconds, ahead of Samantha Shaver in second-place (12.43) and Ashley Grazen in fourth (12.57). Carey, Grazen and Shaver also ran in the 200m dash, taking spots three, four and six, respectively, behind Bennisha Nunn who finished runner-up at 25.27 seconds.
Chelsea Laury competed in three events Saturday, running a career-best 2:23.94 to take sixth in the 800m and taking third in the 100m hurdles at 14.7 seconds. Laury also competed in the high jump, taking fifth at 1.60m (5' 2.75"). In the 400m dash, Aiyanna Crawford finished third with a time of 56.82 seconds.
Olivia Davis was Kent State's top finisher in the 1,500m, capturing third-place at 4:44.60, followed by Sarah Pack in eighth in at 4:53.19.
Maria Horrigan led the Golden Flashes in the pole vault finishing tied for second at height of 4.02m (13' 2.25"). Morgan Estes and Sam Tollerud each finished at a height of 3.87m (12' 8.25") but Estes came away in fourth-place and Tollerud in fifth.
Talia Falco also secured a runner-up finish, taking second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.56m (37' 11"). With a mark of 1.65m (5' 4.75"), Lauren Pannell finished tied for second in the high jump. In the long jump, Raja Rutherford finished at 5.08m (16' 8"). L
Rebecca Leppelmeier claimed third-place in the discus at 45.64m (149' 8.75"), followed by Jai'Lyn Mosley in fourth (45.28m-149' 8.25"), Victoria Ross in seventh (42.0m-137' 9.5") and Ada Nicholson-Burley in eighth (40.78m-133' 9.5").
Next up on the schedule for Kent State track and field is the 2017 MAC Outdoor Championships, to be hosted by Western Michigan May 11-13.
