Kent State sophomore Derek Adams (Manheim, Pa.) was named to the 2017 Ray Guy Award preseason watch list Wednesday by the Augusta Sports Council. The Ray Guy Award is presented annually to the nation's top punter.
Adams is one of only seven sophomores on the 29-member list, after earning the Golden Flashes' starting role as a true freshman in 2016. He pinned 29 of his punts inside the 20-yardline last year with only one touchback. Following his performance at Bowling Green, Adams was named Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week.
A complete list of candidates will be announced on Oct. 31 and semifinalists will be chosen Nov. 16. The pool will be narrowed down to three finalists on Nov. 21 and the winner will be announced during the Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 7.
Kent State opens its 2017 season Sept. 2, at Clemson followed by its home opener Sept. 9, against Howard.
