PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Despite leading in shots and corners on the day, Kent State (0-1) dropped its first contest of the season Friday afternoon by a score of 4-1 at Rutgers (1-0).
The Golden Flashes totaled 14 shots to Scarlet Knights' 11 and earned five corners to the opposition's four, but could not make the opportunities count.
Rutgers took a 2-0 lead into halftime as they scored early on after being awarded a penalty stroke and then again just before the half.
Kent State connected at the 51:07 mark to get on the board for the first time of the season. Berta Jover Llorens made some moves in the circle and fired a ball on cage; Silvia Figa Malgosa was ready and waiting to redirect the ball into the net to make it a 2-1 game.
Seven minutes later, Rutgers earned a corner opportunity and got its two-goal lead back. The Scarlet Knights then scored with less than a minute to play on another corner to make it a 4-1 final.
Ines Delpech led the team in shots with six while Helen Harper and Alison Harmatz both finished with two shots each. Azure Fernsler held down the full seventy minutes in net with three saves.
The Golden Flashes remain in New Jersey to take on Monmouth on Sunday at noon.
