OLEAN, N.Y. – The Kent State soccer team (1-2) recorded its first win of the 2017 season, 4-0, over St. Bonaventure (0-4) behind Cameron Shedenhelm's two goals, as Kent State found its offensive rhythm in the mountains of Western New York.
"I'm really proud of the effort that we had today. That's what we are going to build on, the first ten minutes was fantastic and that's what we asked them to do," said Kent State head coach Rob Marinaro. "I think we got a lot out of our unit today, and I'm really proud of the teamwork that we had."
Aside from Shedenhelm's two goal outburst, Kent State also had key contributors with Vital Kats' one goal and one assist, and Karly Hellstrom's two assists.
Kent State got on the board in the ninth minute as Vital Kats scored her second goal of the season when she made a quick move 20 yards out to create green space in front of her and shot from the top of the box. Donavan Capehart tallied her first point of the season with an assist.
In the 41st minute Karly Hellstrom served a corner kick in front of the St. Bonaventure goal and Cameron Shedenhelm headed the ball past Bonnies' keeper Lauren Malcolm to extend Kent State's lead to 2-0, while tallying her first career goal and first goal of the day. It's the first career points for both Hellstrom and Shedenhelm.
The Flashes defense played a stellar first period as Kent State did not allow a St. Bonaventure shot. Kent State rattled off nine shots and five shots on goal.
"Defensively I thought we were fantastic today as an entire unit," said Marinaro. "We were shutting them down and on the ball with a lot of pressure, and that's what we're asking our team to do and they really executed today."
Kent State's offense continued its attack in the second period as the Flashes scored for the third time in the 52nd minute. Hayden Pascoe lofted a shot behind the out coming keeper and bounced it into the back of the net. Vital Kats was credited her third point of the afternoon with an assist.
In the 63rd minute Cameron Shedenhelm scored for the second time from an assist by Karly Hellstrom to make the score 4-0. Shedenhelm knocked in a loose ball when the St. Bonaventure keeper came out to defend Hellstrom's pass.
"Cameron has been training really well this past week and stepped up today," said Marinaro. "Fortunately for her she was on the end, but credit to the entire team for playing really quality soccer."
The Flashes were in control of the match throughout as the ball was rarely possessed by the Bonnies.
Overall the Flashes led in shots 18-5 and corner kicks 6-1. Kent State did not allow a shot on goal the entire match, and the Bonnies only had their first shot in the middle of the second period.
Kent State goalkeeper Katie Kingsbury received her first start of the season and recorded the win, while not making a save. St. Bonaventure's Lauren Malcolm dropped to 0-4, and made nine saves on 13 shots on goal.
The Flashes continue their road swing next weekend when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla. to take on two NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago as part of the FGCU Tournament. Kent State will play host Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. and Florida Atlantic on Sunday Sept. 3 at 10:30 a.m.
