Kent State's preseason football camp began Thursday morning with a familiar face in a new role. The Golden Flashes welcomed back O.J. Santiago, who was recently named tight ends coach and assistant special teams coordinator.
"Our players were super-excited when they found out he was going to be the coach," Head Coach Paul Haynes said. "He brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm. And when you put together his experience in the NFL, the fact that he put on this uniform and his time with the team last year, it really excites our guys."
A nine-year NFL veteran, Santiago returned to Kent State during the 2016 season as a student assistant coach, while completing his bachelor's degree. During that time, he worked closely with tight ends and special teams.
Santiago was a three-year letterwinner with the Flashes from 1994-96 and was an all-conference selection at tight end. He was also a three-time Academic All-MAC selection.
Along with Haynes and Defensive Line Coach Colin Ferrell, Kent State now has three former players on its full-time coaching staff.
After getting drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round, Santiago's pro career was highlighted by a start in Super Bowl XXXIII.
Kent State opens its season Sept. 2, visiting defending national champion Clemson. The Flashes home opener is set for Sept. 9, against Howard.
