KENT, Ohio. – Kent State lost to College of Charleston (17-25, 7-25, 17-25) at the M.A.C. Center Sunday in the final match of the Golden Flashes Classic.
The Golden Flashes (1-7) allowed the Cougars to record more kills (56) and a higher hitting percentage (.446) than any opponent this season.
"We are typically a pretty strong team defensively," said head coach Don Gromala. "Even though we have some inexperienced players at some positions, there are things that we do every day in practice that people need to step up and do in matches. We are going to get back to practice this week and work hard to be better next weekend."
The teams went back-and-forth early in the match with 10 ties and five lead changes as the score was tied 12-12. College of Charleston then put together scoring runs of three, four and three points to take the set, 25-17.
Kent State had one of its best offensive sets of the season with 12 kills and no errors on 27 attempts for a .444 hitting percentage. The Cougars, however, had 22 kills on 38 attempts with three errors for a .500 hitting percentage.
College of Charleston was in command the rest of the way, scoring the first eight points and then the first five points in the second and third sets, respectively.
Senior libero Challen Geraghty had a match-high 14 digs and sophomore Claire Tulisiak added eight digs.
Offensively, senior outside hitter Kelsey Bittinger led the Flashes with seven kills. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Darby Connors provided five kills on 12 errorless swings for a .417 hitting percentage.
Junior opposite Amy Kober and senior setter Brittney Jakscht each had four kills and no errors while playing the final two sets. Jakscht also led the Flashes with 11 assists.
Kent State will play its final non-conference weekend at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational, hosted by Oakland University on Sept. 15-16.
