KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University field hockey team (2-5) is set for two matches this weekend, beginning Friday with the Mid-American Conference opener at Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
Following the league opener against the Mountaineers, the Golden Flashes will head to Lynchburg, Virginia to face off against the Liberty Flames Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for both matches, while Liberty will provide live video.
Kent State is coming off a tough stretch of matches that included a win over No. 23 Ohio State on the road, 2-1. Kent State then traveled to Evanston, Illinois for a pair close losses, including a one-goal defeat at 14th-ranked Northwestern. The strong showing for the week was reflected in the Flashes' sweep of the weekly MAC student-athlete honors. Ines Delpech was named Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman goalkeeper Kylie LeBlanc was honored for defense.
The Flashes begin MAC play with a target on their back, having been picked to repeat as MAC regular season and tournament champions this season. The six other coaches in the league all picked Kent State to return to the NCAA Tournament. Following Friday's conference match, Kent State will play in three straight road matches to end the majority of nonconference play.
Appalachian State enters MAC play with a 2-4 record, hosting Kent State and Miami this weekend. The Mountaineers went 1-1 last week, picking up a shutout win over Davidson and a loss to No. 4 North Carolina. Senior midfielder Taylor Cimbalist scored in both matches for the Mountaineers.
Liberty enters the weekend 1-3 and will open BIG EAST play Saturday against Villanova before hosting Kent State. Liberty was picked second in the BIG EAST preseason poll to national contender Connecticut. Liberty's lone win this season came against the MAC's Longwood on the road, 3-2. Their most recent result was a one goal loss to No. 6 Delaware, 3-2.
