BOONE, N.C. – The Kent State University field hockey team (3-5, 1-0 MAC) started off Mid-American Conference play with a 3-0 road victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers (2-5, 0-1 MAC).
The win was the 127th in the career of head coach Kathleen Wiler, putting her in sole possession of the record for most wins in program history. Wiler, who has been the leader of the field hockey program since 2006, overtook previous record holder Kerry De Vries.
While Kent State controlled the action over the full 70 minutes, the Golden Flashes broke through with a trio of second half goals. After a scoreless first period, Kent State took the lead in the 29th minute. Helen Harper scored the game-winner and was assisted by Jamie Fries and Jessica Nesbitt. It was Harper's team-best tying third goal of the season and second game-winner.
The Flashes continued to apply pressure, taking 10 more shots over the next 25 minutes to the Mountaineers' one. The attack broke through after a penalty corner in the 62nd minute, with Alison Harmatz scoring her first goal of the season. Nesbitt earned her team-best fifth assist. Two minutes later Eilidh Thomson found Laila Richter for her first goal of the season, solidifying the final score.
Overall, Kent State outshot the home team 18-6, with 14 shots coming in the second half. Although three goals were allowed, App State was forced to make nine saves. Kent State also had eight corner opportunities to the Mountaineers' three.
The defense came out in full force, including a shutout performance on the back line from MAC Offensive Player of the Week Ines Delpech. The reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week Kylie LeBlanc came up with three saves in the shutout.
