Field Hockey Bested at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Kent State University field hockey team (3-6) returned to nonconference play Sunday in a loss at the Liberty Flames (3-3), 7-2.
The match began with Liberty holding the momentum. The Flames started their attack with an early penalty corner, which resulted in a save for freshman Kylie LeBlanc. On the Flashes' sixth shot in the 15th minute, the home team took the lead. Liberty continued to apply pressure, scoring directly off a corner four minutes later.
Kent State's offense did not make a mark until late in the first half. However, the Flashes would score on their opening shot of the match in the 33rd minute. Senior Shannon Talbot scored her first goal of the season and 13th of her career, while Ines Delpech earned her first assist of the season. Talbot attempted to bring the match equal in the last minute of the half, but her second shot was blocked.
Liberty built on its lead in the second half to seal its home victory. The Flames scored a pair of goals in the 40th and 45th minute, respectively. With 17 minutes left, Liberty would tack on two goals to grow the deficit. Kent State fought until the end, and picked up its second goal in the 61st minute. Sophomore Laila Richter took a shot from the top corner of the circle, deflecting the ball off a Liberty defender and into the goal. Liberty's final goal came in the 67th minute, solidifying the final score.
Kent State will head to St. Louis for its final set of road matches before its home debut, starting with Richmond Saturday.
