Road Troubles Against RedHawks

OXFORD, Ohio – With its rivalry game quickly approaching, Kent State will have reason to put Saturday's loss at Miami in the past. The RedHawks took advantage of a 21-point second quarter in a 31-6 victory at Yager Stadium.
Sophomore Woody Barrett's seven-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter was the Golden Flashes' lone score of the game.
"I am obviously disappointed in the effort. It starts with me first and foremost," Head Coach Sean Lewis said. "I failed the kids somewhere along the week. I have to go back and reassess how we approached last week. The growth that we have made did not show up today. The effort was disappointing. I know that we are better than that. Our friends and fans that made the trip deserve better than that."
After a scoreless first quarter, Miami capped off a 98-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run from quarterback Gus Ragland. The RedHawks took their next drive 74 yards on 10 plays, finished off by a two-yard touchdown run from Kenny Young.
With two minutes left in the half, Ragland found Luke Mayock in the back of the end zone to put the RedHawks up 21-0.
"Tip of the cap to Chuck Martin and his staff," Lewis said. "They did a fabulous job. They really beat us in all three phases. We have to do a better job getting back to square one. As far as I'm concerned, we are 0-0 moving forward. We have a really important game back in Dix Stadium this upcoming week. We are going to know who is truly all in with us and who has bought in to our way of doing things as we continue the rest of our season."
The Flashes had the ball in RedHawk territory four times in the first half, but could not come away with points.
"It is a matter of focus and putting our kids in the best possible position to succeed," Lewis said. "We need to develop an instinct for those moments. We need to know that there is a chance to really impact the game and jump on those opportunities as opposed to thinking that they are going to be given to us."
Miami scored on its first drive of the second half when Jaylon Betser went up the middle for a six-yard touchdown run.
The Flashes then marched down the field to the Miami 18, before a pass deflected off a receiver and was intercepted. The turnover led to a RedHawk field goal and 31-0 lead.
Barrett's touchdown run was set up on a short field as the drive began with a 15-yard pass to Mike Carrigan, who led the Flashes 51 yards receiving. Carrigan has at least 50 or more receiving yards in five of seven games.
Junior Justin Rankin rushed for 50 yards, while Barrett finished with 75 yards on the ground. Kent State has rushed for 100 or more yards in six of seven games this season.
Sophomore cornerback Keith Sherald Jr. had career-highs of 14 tackles and 10 solo stops. Senior linebacker Matt Bahr made seven solo tackles.
Freshman Matt Harmon made his first career start at linebacker.
The coveted Wagon Wheel will be on the line Saturday, Oct. 20, when Kent State hosts archrival Akron on Hall of Fame Day and Senior Day at Dix Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Earlier in the day former NFL and Flashes' defensive back Usama Young will be inducted into Kent State's Varsity "K" Athletic Hall of Fame.
