Kent State junior punter Derek Adams (Manheim, Pa.) earned a pair of honors Monday, for his performance Saturday against Akron at Dix Stadium. Adams was named Mid-American Conference East Division Special Teams Player of the Week for the fourth time in his career and was named to Ray's 8, as one of the Ray Guy Award's top eight punters around the nation.
Playing in his first game of the season following an injury, Adams had a career-long 77-yard punt in the third quarter, tying for the third longest punt in program history. Late in the fourth quarter with the score tied, he flipped the field with a 73-yard punt.
"Derek makes a major impact in that phase of the game," head Coach Sean Lewis said. "When you have a weapon like Derek it's huge. In these types of games you need your best players to play their best and he responded."
Adams averaged 46.4 yards on eight punts, none of which were returned. He had four punts inside the 20.
An All-MAC Second Team selection in 2017, Adams ranks second in career punting average at Kent State.
The Ray Guy Award will name its national punter of the week on Wednesday.
Kent State returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 30 at Bowling Green.
