
Flashes Advance to the MAC Championship

OXFORD, Ohio –The No. 2 Kent State University field hockey (8-11) team defeated No. 6 Appalachian State (7-14), 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinal Friday afternoon at the Miami Field Hockey Complext to advance to the championship game. Three seniors, Jessica Apelt, Helen Harper and Courtney Weise, notched goals on the day in addition to a goal by sophomore Clara Rodriguez Seto.
"We wanted to put ourselves in a position to play for a tournament championship and that's what we did today," head coach Kathleen Wiler said, "We are looking forward to competing tomorrow!"
Helen Harper netted the first goal for the Flashes in the 10th minute, diving as she knocked the ball past the Appalachian State goalkeeper. In the 27th minute, Weise added a goal to extend the lead to 2-0 on a direct corner at the top of the shooting circle. Rodriguez Seto recorded the assist on the play.
The second half featured a defensive battle between the two teams until senior Jessica Apelt fired a goal in the 51st minute to bring the score to 3-0. Rodriguez Seto netted the Kent State's fourth and final goal of the day, her sixth of the season, collecting the ball off a rebound on a penalty corner in the 59th minute.
The Flashes dominated the Mountaineers offensively, holding a 15-5 advantage in shot attempts on the day, also taking five attack corners. In goal, junior Mary Crumlish recorded two saves on the five shots faced.
Kent State will compete in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship against No. 1 Miami University tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio. The Flashes will look to reclaim the tournament title from the RedHawks after falling to Miami in overtime in the championship game a year ago.
