2018 Campaign Ends at the MAC Tournament Championship

OXFORD, Ohio –The Kent State University field hockey team (8-12) ended its season at the Mid-American Conference Championship, falling to the top-seeded Miami RedHawks (15-6), 5-3. Sophomore Emma Bressler scored two goals with an assist on the day in addition to a goal by senior Pippa Best.
In an action-packed first half, the Flashes fell behind 2-0 on unassisted goals by Miami's Paula Portugal and Kenzie Peterson, however they cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 34th minute on a penalty corner. Sophomore Clara Rodriguez Seto inserted the ball from the left side of the cage to sophomore Emma Bressler, who stopped the ball and fired a shot between the legs of the Miami goalkeeper.
In the first half, the RedHawks held a 12-2 shot advantage over the Flashes, however the Flashes defended three penalty corners in the first 35 minutes.
The RedHawks extended the lead to 3-1 early in the second half following a penalty corner. Junior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish made two key saves off the corner before Miami's Leonor Berlie netted the goal.
The Flashes responded immediately to bring the score to 3-2, with 29 minutes remaining in the game. Bressler netted her second goal of the day on a direct corner, lofting the ball over the Miami defense into the right corner of the cage.
In the 44th minute, the Redhawks netted the team's fourth goal of the day off the stick of Lexi Silver, and added a fifth goal in the 53rd minute off the stick of Noor Breedijk to extend the lead to 5-2.
Senior Pippa Best netted the final goal of the day in the 68th minute to bring the final score to 5-3. Best deflected the ball past the goalkeeper on a shot attempt off of a penalty corner by Bressler.
Crumlish led the Kent State defense from the cage with 11 saves on the day, while sophomore Ashley Bonetz recorded a defensive save. The Flashes attacked the goal with eight additional shots in the second half, drawing five attack corners.
Seniors Jessica Apelt, Helen Harper, and Courtney Weise were named to the All-Tournament team for their performance following the contest.
The Flashes concluded the 2018 campaign 8-12 overall and second place in both the conference regular season and tournament.
