Flashes Drop Heartbreaker in Athens, 79-78

ATHENS, Ohio – After getting a key stop on the defensive end of the floor to get the ball back with 17.6 seconds remaining in a one-point game, Kent State was unable to get a pair of potential game-winning shots to fall, and host Ohio escaped with a 79-78 victory Wednesday night inside of the Convocation Center.
The Golden Flashes (11-15, 4-10 MAC) held a decisive 42-26 rebounding advantage and outscored the Bobcats 16-4 in second-chance points.
Senior Jordan Korinek had a perfect night shooting the ball en route to scoring a game-high 26 points. Korinek was 9-for-9 from the field and 7-for-7 at the charity stripe. The All-MAC forward also grabbed nine rebounds. Junior Alexa Golden added 14 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Senior Naddiyah Cross led the Flashes with seven assists and graduate student McKenna Stephens matched her career-high with five assists.
Kent State received solid contributions off the bench from redshirt junior Tyra James and redshirt senior Zenobia Bess. James scored in double-figures for the first time this season and finished with 15 points to go with a career-high three blocks. Bess pulled down a career-high seven rebounds and matched her career-high with six points in only eight minutes of action.
The Golden Flashes host rival Akron for Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.
