Flashes' late-inning big inning strikes again as KSU slips past Lipscomb
NASHVILLE – A three-run seventh inning erased a 1-0 deficit as the Golden Flashes edged Lipscomb, 3-1 thanks to an untimely defensive miscue in the second game of the Southern Athletic Field Dirt Classic for both teams.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning, Mason Mamarella drove in his seventh run of the weekend with a sacrifice fly. Nick Kanavas then followed with a similar fly ball, but this one found leather and grass as the misplay allowed two Flashes to score. Up until that point, Lipscomb starter Chris Kachmar had been sensational.
Meanwhile, KSU starter Joey Murray was equally as impressive but was in danger of being on the tough luck end of Saturday's decision before the late-inning fireworks began. The Kent State pitching staff allowed just three hits and struck out 14 on the day. Murray was his usual solid self with a 5-inning effort on 90 pitches. He allowed one run on three hits and seven punchouts. Connor Wollersheim was outstanding in relief to pick up the win and Robert Zeigler worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the side for the save.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Golden Flashes will wrap up their run through the Music City on Sunday as they take on Middle Tennessee at 2:00/1c.
