KSU drops its second league series of 2018
KENT, OHIO – It was a terrifying sense of déjà-vu for the Golden Flashes on Sunday afternoon as another late lead evaporated in the rubber game of a three-game series.
Leading 4-0, KSU starter Eli Kraus became the second Flashes starter in as many days to carry a shutout into the seventh. And just like Saturday, the Bobcats used some odd plays to not only tie the game at four, but also take a 5-4 lead on a handful of free bases. OU sent 10 men to the plate to take its first lead of the game.
Up until the seventh inning issues, Kent State was cruising again. Without an RBI hit, the Golden Flashes economically constructed their four-run lead. Using an array of bunts, stolen bases, ground outs and an Ohio error, KSU was seemingly in command again. Mason Mamarella brought in two of the four on a bunt and later a ground out.
The key to the series was OU's bullpen. Forced to log multiple innings due to injuries in the rotation, the Bobcat relievers shut down the Golden Flashes offense in all three games. On Sunday, Kenny Ogg turned KSU back over the final five frames.
For just the second time in 2018, the Golden Flashes dropped back-to-back games. KSU will be back in action on Tuesday in Buffalo against Canisius.
