KENT, Ohio – With the match winding down to the final stages of regulation, freshman Autumn Meisenburg came through with the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to lift Kent State (1-1-0) to a 2-1 victory over St. Bonaventure (0-1-1), on Sunday afternoon at Dix Stadium.
"The team's response was excellent after they tied the match. Our game elevated and we starting to put a lot of pressure on them," said Kent State head coach Rob Marinaro. "I thought we were solid on defense throughout. We were winning a lot of first and second balls but in the future, we need to create a little more off our possessions."
Meisenburg was the beneficiary of a Golden Flashes offense that pelted the St. Bonaventure defense with a 14-2 shot advantage in the second period. She collected the ball roughly 20 yards out and beat St. Bonavanture keeper Lauren Malcom with a strike in the lower left portion of the goal for her first career score.
"It was an awesome feeling," said Meisenburg. "It was crazy, I don't even remember scoring the goal, but when I turned around and saw the team running out it was an amazing feeling."
Kent State got on the board first, just 1:13 into the match, when senior Cassandra Sauter netted the first goal of her career and kicked in a loose ball straight in front of the net off a deflection.
"We showed up and put one away early," said Sauter. "That goal is from everybody just driving forward and winning balls in the air."
Kent State peppered the Bonnies defense and led in shots (25-6), shots on goal (9-2) and registered the most corner kicks (14-0) in program history.
Flashes redshirt freshman goalkeeper Faith O'Neill (1-1-0) faced only two shots on goal the entire match and made one save. Malcolm (0-1-1) faced a barrage of nine shots on goal and made seven saves.
"We got a big one late in the game," remarked Marinaro. "We have to be better for 90 minutes, and played in waves which wasn't good enough for us. We'll go back at it and see if we can stay more consistent for an entire match."
Kent State begins a four-match road swing over the next two weekends of non-conference play. The Flashes travel to the Steel City to battle Pitt on Friday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. and make the short drive to Cleveland State for a Sunday, Aug. 26, 1 p.m. tilt with the Vikings.
