Flashes Squeeze Out Double Overtime Victory Against Orange

Kent State Downs ACC Foe For Second Consecutive Year
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Isabelle Mihail scored two goals including the game winner in double overtime to earn the come from behind victory, as Kent State (4-3-1) downed Syracuse (3-5-0), 2-1, on Thursday night. It's the second year in a row the Golden Flashes have defeated a Power 5 foe on a game-winner from Mihail.
She scored the game-winning goal on a shot from the left side that hit the crossbar and bounced into the net. Sophomores Maddie Holmes and Vital Kats each recorded an assist. Miahil now leads the Flashes in goals (3) and is second in points (7).
The Kitchener, Ontario native scored the equalizer in the 80th minute when Orange goalkeeper Lysianna Proulx overplayed the ball and was beaten from point blank range. Kent State came back from a 1-0 deficit when Syracuse sophomore Kate Hostage broke through and scored from 16 yards for her fourth tally of the campaign. For a brief moment in the 37th minute, Kent State thought it scored first, but was called offside.
Kent State amped up its offensive attack in the second period and led in shots (13-3) and corner kicks (4-2). It continued into the extra periods as the Flashes continued to control the ball with a 4-1 shot advantage.
Senior goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald (2-0-0) recorded her 36th career victory and now sits atop the program record book passing Stephanie Senn (2013-15). McDonald faced 10 shots and made four saves. Syracuse used two keepers as redshirt senior Jordan Harris played the first period and did not allow a goal. Sophomore Lysianna Prioux (1-2-0) played the second period on and allowed both goals while making eight saves.
For the match Kent State led in shots (26-14), shots on goal (14-5) and corner kicks (6-5). Mihail became the third Golden Flash to score two goals in a match this season, joining Khyla Porter (Aug. 26 at Cleveland State) and Yasmine Hall (Sept. 7 vs. Morehead State). The Golden Flashes are now 4-0 when scoring two goals in a game and 4-7-3 all-time against ACC schools.
Kent State embarks on Mid-American Conference play next week with matches at Eastern Michigan on Friday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. and at Central Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
