INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. โ Kent State earn a 3-1 (25-20, 10-25, 25-18, 31-29) win over Horizon League favorite Cleveland State in the first of two matches on Saturday at the Bulldog Brawl. The Golden Flashes then fell to host Butler, 3-0 (12-25, 18-25, 28-30), in the final non-conference contest of the season.
"Overall, it was a solid weekend for us," said head coach Don Gromala, whose team will head into Mid-American Conference play with a 7-7 record. "We played some very good volleyball overall, especially in the first two matches. I think all of these teams here are very talented. The finish wasn't what we were hoping for, but we were physically, and maybe emotionally, a little spent. We will rest and recharge for a big turnaround with conference play starting against one of our rivals on Thursday night."
Freshman Erin Gardner was named to the all-tournament team. Gardner , who tallied 37 digs and was perfect on 33 service receptions Saturday, averaged 5.82 digs per over the Flashes' three matches.
"Erin was very steady throughout the entire weekend making plays," Gromala stated. "She was all over the floor and working as hard as she could for everything. Her serving, when it was on, was really tough, and she had some big runs for us. Most importantly, her serve-receive was really steady and consistent to give us options with our offense."
Kent State had five players post double-figure kills on the day, led by senior Amy Kober's 14. Sophomore Myla King and freshman Kathryn Ellison had 12 kills each, while senior Darby Connors and freshman Danie Tyson contributed 10 apiece. Redshirt freshman Alex Haffner recorded 57 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore Kaeleigh Stang aided the floor defense with 20 digs.
