Field Hockey Drops First MAC Contest

Oxford, Ohio β The Kent State University field hockey team (2-8, 0-1 MAC) kicked off the Mid-American Conference schedule with a 3-0 loss to Miami (6-4, 2-0 MAC) on the road Saturday afternoon. Junior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish led the flashes from net, racking up 7 saves on 16 shots faced.Β
The Flashes played a highly defensive first half, holding the RedHawks to a single goal on 7 shots and 2 corners. Miami notched the first goal of the game in the 24thΒ minute when Estel Roig tipped the ball in from a shot on a penalty corner. Leonor Berlie recorded the assist.
Coming out of the halftime break, the defensive battle continued until the RedHawks broke through with a goal in the 50thΒ minute. Miami's Paula Portugal fired a shot into the net directly off the penalty corner. Kendall Hunker and Kirsten McNeil picked up the assists. Portugal added the third and final goal of the contest unassisted in the 60thΒ minute.
Miami held the advantage over Kent State in shots, 16-2 and in corners, 5-2. JuniorΒ Laila Richter led the Flashes with a shot on goal and senior Courtney Weise added a shot attempt.
The Flashes will return home to Murphy-Mellis to face Saint Francis tomorrow, Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
