KENT, OhioβThe Kent State University field hockey team will look to take down defending MAC Champs, the Miami RedHawks in Oxford, Ohio to begin the Mid-American Conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 12:00 p.m. The Flashes will return to Murphy-MellisΒ Field following a five-game road swing the next day to host Saint Francis University on Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
The Golden Flashes (2-7) return to Ohio from their cross-country trip to California last weekend. Kent State fell University of the Pacific, 2-0 and took No. 23 Stanford into overtime, losing 2-1. Junior goalkeeper Mary Crumlish led the Flashes from the net, tallying 9 saves in the two games and racking up 6 saves against the Cardinal. Freshman Sydney Carr recorded the lone goal of the weekend against Stanford.
SCOUTING MIAMI
The 2018 MAC regular season and tournament champions, Miami is 5-4 on the season and has picked up its first conference victory over Ball State on Saturday. On the season, the RedHawks have tallied 20 goals on 121 shots and have faced four ranked teams, defeating No. 22 Ohio State, 2-1 on Sunday.
Senior Paula Portugal leads the RedHawks with 7 goals and 3 assists, followed by sophomores Lexie Nugent and Allie Grace Joyner notching 3 goals apiece. In goal, Maddie Passarella has totaled 26 saves and a .667 save percentage on the season.Β
The Flashes last faced the long-time rival in the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship match, falling in overtime, 2-1 and ending a historic run as the Flashes aimed for their fourth straight MAC Tournament Championship.
SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS
Saint Francis (3-5, 1-0 A10) split last weekend, defeating La Salle, 4-0 to pick up its first A-10 win of the season, and falling on the road to Rider, 3-0 on Sunday. On the season, Brianna Govia leads the Red Flash with 3 goals and 4 assists, while five other players have scored 2 goals. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Dyer has racked up 39 saves and has earned one shut out in the cage for Saint Francis. The Red Flash have notched 17 goals in the first 8 games with 66 shots on goal.
Kent State is 3-1 all time against Saint Francis, picking up a 1-0 win in Loretto, Pa. a year ago on Sept. 1, 2017.
The Red Flash will travel to Missouri to face the Saint Louis Billikens on Friday, Sept. 21 before facing Kent State at Murphy-Mellis Field on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
