
Field Hockey Set to Start Road Swing at Penn State and Temple

KENT, Ohio –The Kent State University field hockey team (1-4) is set to start a five-game road swing this weekend traveling to Penn State and Temple University. The Flashes will push off against No. 5 Penn State (2-1) in University Park on Friday, Sept. 7 at 4:00 p.m. and round out the weekend facing Temple (0-4) at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.
The Flashes finished up their three-game homestand with a 4-2 loss to No. 9 Northwestern Tuesday afternoon. Junior Laila Richter and sophomore Clara Rodriguez Setó each tallied goals in the contest and Setó and sophomore Emma Bressler recorded assists for the Flashes.
Kent State's defense has been instrumental in the start to the 2018 campaign, holding No. 16 Liberty to a just 2 goals in the contest, a season-low for the Flames, and limiting Saint Louis to only 6 shots earlier in the homestand. The Kent State defense held Northwestern to just 9 shot attempts Tuesday afternoon.
SCOUTING PENN STATE
The No. 5 Nittany Lions have started the season 2-1, defeating No. 8 Virginia and Temple and falling to No. 6 Princeton in double-overtime. Penn State has notched 6 goals in the first three games on 64 shot attempts and has allowed only 2 goals against, both to Princeton Tuesday afternoon. Senior Emily Klingler and freshman Anna Simon lead the team with 2 goals apiece.
The Flashes faced Penn State a year ago on their home turf, falling to the Nittany Lions 5-3 on Oct. 1, 2017. Kent State is 0-4-0 all-time against Penn State.
SCOUTING TEMPLE
Temple is off to a rocky 0-4 start to 2018, being shut out in the last three games. The Owls have scored 2 goals on 43 shots so far this season. Sam Souder and Mia Sexton lead the team with a goal apiece.
In goal for the Owls, senior Chloe Johnson has been instrumental, racking up 41 saves on the season. Against No. 5 Penn State, Johnson had a career high 19 saves, seven more than her previous career high and 12 of which coming in the first half. Johnson and the Temple defense also limited the Nittany Lions to 2 goals in a total of 21 penalty corner opportunities.
The Flashes faced Temple last season in Evanston, Illinois on Sept. 9. Temple defeated the Flashes 1-0 on a goal with 1:11 remaining on the clock. All-time against the Owls, the Flashes hold a 0-5-0 record.
Temple will take on Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 7 before hosting Kent State on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1:00 p.m.
