
Flashes to Open Virginia Duals Friday with Old Dominion

Kent State (6-7, 1-1 MAC) will be among eight teams competing at the 39th annual Virginia Duals inside the Hampton Coliseum Friday and Saturday in Hampton, Virginia. The Golden Flashes will compete in a minimum of three duals, beginning with Old Dominion in the quarterfinals Friday at 11 a.m.
The opener against the Monarchs will serve as an official Mid-American Conference matchup. In their second dual, the Flashes will take on either No. 13 Virginia Tech or Chattanooga. The remainder of the field includes No. 16 Arizona State, No. 20 Lock Haven, Oklahoma and Virginia.

Last Time Out
Kent State went 2-2 at the South Beach Duals (Dec. 29-30), highlighted by an 18-17 victory over Michigan State. The Flashes also took on SIU-Edwardsville in the first MAC dual between the two programs and topped the Cougars 23-14.
McNally's Immediate Impact
Sophomore 184-pounder Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio) ranks third among NCAA Division I pin leaders with 10. A transfer from Eastern Michigan, McNally also leads the Flashes in wins (21), bonus-point victories (17) and major decisions (6). He was named MAC Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season on Dec. 20, after winning a 184-pound title at the Cleveland State Open.
McNally was also named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 7, after winning a Clarion Open title and going 8-0 in his opening weekend. In Kent State's win over Michigan State, McNally pinned previously undefeated Cameron Caffey.
Quick Shots
- Five of the Flashes' losses have come against Top 10 opponents (Penn State, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin)
- Spencer Berthold (285) and Cory Simpson (141) each placed sixth at Cleveland State after winning four consecutive consolation bracket matches.
- Junior Tim Rooney won a 133-pound title at the Cougar Clash on Dec. 2.
- In November, Rooney was named MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week, after going 5-1 in a third place finish at the Navy Classic.
- Senior Isaac Bast (165) and sophomore Dylan Barreiro (174) joined McNally with titles at the Clarion Open.
- McNally, Bast and Kody Komara (149) all placed fourth at the Navy Classic.
- The NWCA honored Kent State for having the second highest grade point average in the nation last season at 3.497, trailing only Harvard.
- Since 2005-06 (Jim Andrassy's third season), Kent State is 164-97-1 in dual meets and 52-28-1 in MAC duals
- Freshman Tim Wallace has won a pair of open tournament crowns, competing unattached at 184. He's reached the finals three of the four tournaments he's competed in.
- Bast, the lone active senior on the team, leads the Flashes with 91 career victories.
The Opponent
Old Dominion (3-2) earned the No. 3 seed in this weekend's dual tournament after winning its last three meets (Northwestern, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois). The Monarchs received votes in the latest NWCA Top 25. ODU finished fourth at the Navy Classic and third at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Junior 141-pounder Sa'Derian Perry earned All-America honors while at Eastern Michigan last season. This season, he is ranked No. 11 with a 12-3 mark. Junior 157-pounder Larry Early is No. 5 and senior 174-pounder Seldon Wright in No. 18.
Series History
Kent State leads the all-time series with Old Dominion 11-5, dating back to 1990. However, the Monarchs lead the MAC series 3-2, following a 19-14 road victory in Kent last season. Isaac Bast earned one of the Flashes' four victories. ODU and KSU have met seven times at the Virginia Duals, most recently in 2016, a 23-13 victory for the Flashes.
Virginia Duals History
During a stretch of 14 and 16-team tournaments at the Virginia Duals, Kent State placed in the top six spots in eight straight seasons. In 2012, the Golden Flashes went 4-0, capping off its run with an upset of Missouri in the championship round.
Last season, the Flashes finished 2-2 in pool format, with victories over Fresno State and Campbell.
