ATHENS, Ohio – The Kent State football team (3-4, 2-1 MAC) suffered its first Mid-American Conference setback of the 2019 season to the Ohio Bobcats (3-4, 2-1 MAC) with a 45-38 shootout loss that included more than 1,000 yards of total offense.
The Flashes' offense racked up nearly 500 yards, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bobcats' highly efficient scoring attack.
Kent State bolted out of the gates, as Dustin Crum fired a 23-yard strike to Mike Carrigan to put the Golden Flashes on top just over a minute into the ball game. Crum finished 26-for-35 for 262 yards, a career-high four touchdowns and added 96 yards on the ground. He extended his nation-high streak to 188 straight attempts without an interception.
Ohio scored 10 unanswered points, capped off by a 49-yard touchdown pass from Nathan Rourke to a wide-open Isaiah Cox.
Crum hooked up with Kavious Price on a 12-yard touchdown to put the Flashes back in front. Rourke and the Bobcats answered on a 51-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Buckner.
Matthew Trickett connected on his 12th field goal of the season to tie the game up, 17-17. The Flashes used a 54-yard Price reception to convert a 3rd and 16 that eventually led to a two-yard Will Matthews score. Matthews finished with 85 yards on the ground.
Ohio answered just before the half with a three-yard Rourke touchdown run to even the score, 24-24, heading into the locker room.
The Bobcats drove right down the field to open the third quarter and scored on a 1-yard De'Montre Tuggle rush.
The Flashes were held scoreless in the third quarter, but a 27-yard connection from Crum to Raymond James tied the game, 31-31, with 9:28 left to play.
Rourke scampered in the end zone from six yards out to give the Bobcats the go-ahead touchdown. Tuggle added a 19-yard touchdown to push the lead to 14 points, 45-31.
Carrigan added his career-high second touchdown of the day with 0:31 left to play. With the touchdown reception, Carrigan tied a career-high with seven grabs.
The Flashes' onside kick attempt was unsuccessful, and the Bobcats kneeled out the clock to take the victory.
Isaiah McKoy finished with seven catches for 65 yards, while Price secured five passes for 85 yards and touchdown.
Qwuantrezz Knight led the Flashes' defense with a career-high 12 total tackles. Cepeda Phillips racked up nine total tackles and a sack. Keith Sherald Jr. and Akeam Peters each made eight stops.
The Golden Flashes are back home next Saturday, October 26, for Hall of Fame Day at Dix Stadium against Miami at 3:30 p.m. ET. Follow @KentStFootball on Twitter for more updates about the team.
