Golden Flashes Fall to Redhawks in the Rain at Dix Stadium

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State football team (3-5, 2-2 MAC) fell short of a late-game comeback against the Miami Redhawks (4-4, 3-1 MAC), as the Flashes fell, 23-16, in the rain at Dix Stadium.
The Flashes set a season-high with 84 plays ran but averaged only 4.0 yards per play.
The Redhawks jumped out to an early lead, taking a 6-0 advantage on two Sam Sloman field goals.
Dustin Crum saw his current NCAA lead of most pass attempts in a row without an interception come to an end when Miami's Travion Banks picked him off on a deep ball. Crum finished 23-for-44 for 209 yards. He also ran for a team-high 64 yards.
The Flashes finally got on the board early in the second quarter on a 22-yard field goal. The two teams traded field goals to end the first half, with Miami holding a 9-6 advantage at the break.
Miami came out swinging in the third quarter when Brett Gabbert linked up with Luke Mayock in the corner of the end zone for a Redhawk touchdown.
Kent State scored their first touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter on Craig Elmore's first career touchdown rush. The 12-yard scamper also set a new career high for the redshirt freshman.
A 47-yard score by Jaylon Bester on the ensuing drive extended the Redhawks lead, 23-13, with just over three minutes to play.
Trickett connected on a 42-yard field goal to bring the Flashes within one score, 23-16. The onside kick failed, but the Flashes stopped the Miami offense on three plays to regain possession with 0:29 on the clock.
Miami's Lonnie Phelps recorded the game-clinching sack on Crum to vault the Redhawks to the top of the MAC East.
Isaiah McKoy racked up five receptions for 79 yards, while Kavious Price grabbed a career-high seven catches for 44 yards. Will Matthews carried the ball 15 times for 52 yards.
Mandela Lawrence-Burke led the Flashes with 10 tackles and a tackle for loss. Qwuantrezz Knight totaled eight tackles and two tackles for loss. Jamal Parker tied a career-high with four pass break ups and made six stops, while Dominic Hill made a career-high six tackles.
The Golden Flashes kick off #MACtion next Tuesday, November 5, with a road tilt at Toledo. The Flashes next home game is Thursday, November 14, against Buffalo.
