DOHA, Qatar — Former Kent State track and field standout Danniel Thomas-Dodd won the women's shot put silver medal in historic fashion at the 2019 IAAF World Championships on Thursday evening. The Westmoreland, Jamaica native is the first Carribbean woman ever to medal in the event at a World Championships competition with her throw of 19.47 meters (63'-10.5") on her final attempt.
In a post on her Instagram account, Thomas-Dodd stated, "This has been the longest season yet, so many ups and downs. But there was a lot of success. I have to give thanks for all that I was able to accomplish this season. I am so proud of myself and how far I've come in this sport. Little country girl making her mark on the world."
China's Gong Lijiao took gold with a mark of 19.55m (64'-1.75"). For a brief moment, it appeared that Thomas-Dodd would dethrone the defending world champion when her fifth throw hit the 20-meter tape, but a red flag was raised to signal a foul on the attempt.
The World Championships concluded an incredible season for Thomas-Dodd, who broke the Pan American Games shot put record with a mark of 19.55m (64'-1.75") back in August. This also broke her own Jamaican national record and qualified her for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Prior to her final season at Kent State, Thomas-Dodd placed 25th at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
