Kent, Ohio- Kent State running back Xavier Williams and place kicker Matthew Trickett have been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for their efforts in the comeback win over Buffalo.
Williams recorded his first two touchdown day of his career and totaled 98 yards of offense in the win over the Bulls. The running back scored those two touchdowns in record fashion, crossing the goal line twice in 27 seconds of game time. Williams scored his first touchdown on a seven-yard sweep with 7:39 left in the fourth. After an on-side kick recovery, Williams struck again, scoring on a 41-yard swing pass at the 7:12 mark of the fourth quarter. It is believed that the two scores by Williams are the fastest by an individual this season.
Trickett continued his rock-solid sophomore season with a 3-3 effort on Thursday night. Trickett hit from 22, 33, and 44 yards in the 30-27 victory. His 33-yard field goal ended the first half and his 44-yard field goal was his second walk-off, game-winner for the season. The field goal also set a Kent State single season record. The game winner was Trickett's 20th made field goal of the season, breaking the record of 19 set by Freddy Cortez in 2019.
Trickett also executed a perfect on-side kick that he recovered, helping jump start the 4thquarter comeback. Capping off his perfect day, the Cleveland native hit all three of his extra points.
Kent State's comeback puts them at 4-6 on the season and 3-3 in the MAC. They take on a Ball State team on Saturday that has an identical record. Kick-off is set for noon from Dix Stadium, the Golden Flashes will honor their 17 seniors with a pre-game ceremony.
