PITTSBURGH – Redshirt senior Megan Carter sank a floater in the lane with 0.2 remaining on the clock to give Kent State a 77-75 season-opening victory over Duquesne inside of PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday evening.
The Preseason All-MAC East Division selection, who scored eight of her 12 points in the final period, received a return pass after inbounding the ball with 4.3 seconds remaining and was able to create enough separation to get the shot over the defender.
The Golden Flashes (1-0) fought back after trailing by 13 on multiple occasions during the second period. Kent State was able to cut the deficit to a single point entering the fourth and took the lead for the first time since opening minutes of the contest on a jumper by Carter with 3:29 remaining.
The squad's young talent was also on display, as freshmen and sophomores accounted for the remaining 63 points. Sophomore Lindsey Thall shot 6-of-9 from long range to keep the Flashes in the game and finished with 22 points, matching her career-high. Thall also blocked four shots and grabbed five rebounds. Freshman Katie Shumate scored 17 points in her collegiate debut. Sophomore Asiah Dingle totaled 12 points and four assists. Freshman Nila Blackford nearly recorded a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Clare Kelly drained a three-pointer to score Kent State's first points of the season.
The Flashes will travel to Youngstown State on Saturday. Tip from the Beeghly Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
