KENT, Ohio – The Kent State volleyball team improved to 6-1 in five set matches with a crucial 3-2 victory (25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-9) against Eastern Michigan on Saturday as the team returned to the M.A.C. Center following a five-match road swing to start the second half of the Mid-American Conference schedule.
The Golden Flashes (13-13, 6-8 MAC) moved into sole possession of eighth place in the overall conference standings with two matches remaining. The Eagles and Northern Illinois are one game back.
"I'm excited about how we won this match," said head coach Don Gromala. "I think we came out and did some really good things offensively, taking care of serve-receive and establishing the middle. Our middles were on fire to start and that opened up some things throughout the match. Eastern Michigan fought back, and it was a good battle."
Sophomore Danie Tyson had 17 kills to match her career-high and hit at a .469 clip for the night. Freshman Morgan Copley posted five of her 13 kills in the final set. Fellow freshman Savannah Matthews added 11 kills and a career-best 21 digs.
Redshirt sophomore Alex Haffner totaled 53 assists, eight digs and five kills.
Sophomore Erin Gardner led all players with 22 digs.
Kent State closes the regular season next weekend with home matches against rival Akron and Buffalo.
