RIO GRANDE, P.R.- The Kent State University women's golf team got off to a solid start at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday, shooting a 4-over 292 score and sits tied for third place after 18 holes at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course.
Junior Karoline Stormo led the charge with a 2-under par 69 score in the opening round. Stormo completed the bogey-free round with birdies on the No. 1, No. 10, and her final hole. The junior heads into round two tied for second place.
Teammates Thitapa Pakdeesettakul and Kory Nielsen are both tied for 22nd after carding 2-over 74 scored. Pakdeesettakul opened the day with a birdie on her first hole and finished the day with three total. Nielsen went 15 holes for par or better and birdied on hole No. 11.
Junior Pimnipa Panthong carded a 3-over par 75 score and sits in a tie for 29th heading into the second round. Senior Michaela Finn finished the day at 7-over and is tied for 68th.
Sophomore Chloe Salort, who is competing as an individual, shot a 2-under par 70 score. She opened the round with 3-straight birdies on No. 15, No. 16, and No. 17. Salort also added two more that brought her daily total to five birdies. Salort stands fifth headed into tomorrow's round.
Lady Puerto Rico Classic defending champions Arkansas leads the fields after 18 holes at one-over par, 289, while No. 21 TCU is second at 2-over par and Kent State is tied with Purdue in third. Stormo is one-of-three players tied for second place at 3-under, along with Arkansas' Dylan Kim, and Purdue's Danielle du Toit.
Action resumes at 7 a.m. on Monday with a shotgun start. Kent State will play alongside East Caroline and Virginia Tech. Tournament action can be followed at golfstat.com.
