
Indoor Track and Field Set to Host MAC Championships

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete for the conference crown, hosting the 2019 Indoor Track and Field Mid-American Conference Championships at the Kent State Field House Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23. Kent State last hosted the conference meet in 2014.
Action begins Friday at 10:45 a.m. with the 60-meter dash for the men's heptathlon, and the women's pentathlon will begin with the 60-meter hurdles at 11 a.m. Field events are also scheduled to start at 11 a.m. with the women's weight throw. Qualifiers for sprints and hurdles are on the slate for Friday afternoon, as well as the finals for the 5,000-meter run and distance medley relay.
Saturday's action will begin with the men's heptathlon (60-meter hurdles) at 11 a.m. The women's triple jump and shot put and the men's high jump will mark the start of the field events at noon. Championship races are scheduled to start on the track at 1:15 p.m. with the men's mile and will conclude at approximately 4:40 p.m. with the Awards Ceremony to follow at 5:00 p.m.
PREVIEWING THE FLASHES
On the men's side, 29 student-athletes will compete including three that are ranked at the top of the conference in their events. Freshman Asa Hodrick will compete for the individual title in the 200-meter as the top-seed with his time of 21.48. Senior Craig Stevens, Jr. will look to win his third individual title in the triple jump, and will enter the weekend ranked first in the event. Sophomore Jacob Mally is the top-ranked athlete in the heptathlon and will compete against All-American TJ Lawson, who will compete in his first heptathlon of 2019. In 2018, Lawson finished fifth at the indoor national meet in the heptathlon.
Sophomore Jake Wickey won the individual title in the weight throw at the MAC Championships in 2018, and will enter this weekend ranked third in the conference.
On the women's side, 20 student-athletes are scheduled to compete, including four that are ranked in the top-three of the conference in their respective events. Junior Nicole Yeargin is the top-ranked athlete in the 200-meter with a seed time of 24.05. She will also compete in the 400-meter, entering the race ranked sixth in the conference.
Sophomore Alyssa Matheny will compete for the individual title in the high jump, entering the weekend tied for first. Junior Rachel Banks will compete in the 800-meter ranked third with a seed time of 2:10.45.
