Kent State Wins Third Straight

CHARLESTON, S.C. –The Kent State baseball team (3-5) won its third consecutive game, topping The Citadel (2-5), 11-2, Wednesday evening. Redshirt freshman Peyton Deats (1-0) recorded his first career win on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings and striking out three batters.
The Flashes tallied a season-high 14 hits and seven walks with nine batters notching a base hit and eight collecting an RBI. All ten Flashes that went to the plate reached base. Senior Josh Hollander led the Kent State offense, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Ben Carew, senior Pavin Parks, and redshirt sophomore Alex Ronnebaum added two hits apiece in the win.
Kent State fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning when the Bulldogs strung together three hits to score the first run of the game. The Flashes responded in the next frame, taking four walks to tie the game, 1-1.
The bats broke loose in the top of the fourth, as the Flashes tacked on five runs on five hits and two Bulldog errors. Junior Patrick Ferguson led off the inning with Kent State's fifth walk of the game and advanced to second on a ground ball. Sophomore Nick Elsen singled to short stop and Ronnebaum reached on an error to load the bases. Hollander and Parks followed with singles to the outfield to score two runs and force a pitching change. Carew, Touchette, and Lewandoski each added RBIs to extend Kent State's lead to 6-1.
The Flashes were held scoreless in the fifth and The Citadel pushed across a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Kent State picked up runs in every inning to end the game, 11-2.
Redshirt freshman Trevor Pittman started on the mound for the Flashes, tossing 4.1 innings and striking out three in his first career start. Deats pitched 3.2 innings of relief, recording his first career win. The Tiffin, Ohio native held the Bulldogs to just one hit and did not walk a batter, striking out three. Redshirt senior Chris Martin closed out the game with 1.0 inning of work, retiring the side in order and ending the game with a strikeout.
