Flashes Drop Double Header at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Kent State University baseball team (3-7) dropped both games of the double-header at Charlotte (6-4) Saturday, March 2. Senior Connor Wollersheim pitched the full 6.0 innings in the first game, fanning six in the 1-0 loss. Junior John Matthews suffered the loss in the nightcap as the Flashes fell, 7-2.
Game 1: Charlotte 1, Kent State 0 (7 innings)
Wollersheim (0-2) tossed another gem in the first game of the day, allowing just one run and striking out six in 6.0 innings of work. The 49ers managed nine hits off the senior, but the Kent State defense made key defensive plays to strand eight on base.
The 49ers tallied the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, stringing together three hits and scoring on a two-out infield single.
Junior Cam Touchette went 2-for-3 to lead the Kent State offense. Sophomore Greg Lewandoski and senior Pete Schuler added a hit apiece while senior Pavin Parks drew two walks.
Game 2: Charlotte 7, Kent State 2 (9 innings)
The Flashes fell behind early in the nightcap as the Niners poured on four runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the third.
The Flashes snapped the 11-inning shutout in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Alex Ronnebaum led off the inning with a single through the right side and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a ground out. Senior Pavin Parks followed with a double down the right field line, scoring Ronnebaum. Charlotte responded with its final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Sophomore Nick Elsen led off the top of the seventh inning blasting a solo-shot over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 7-2.
Junior John Matthews (0-3) suffered the loss on the mound, allowing seven runs off nine hits and striking out five in 6.0 innings of work. Parks stepped to the mound to close the game, striking out one without allowing a walk in 2.0 innings pitched.
Kent State notched seven hits from six players to close the day. Freshman Grant Vera went 2-for-4 in his first collegiate start at short stop. Redshirt sophomore Jarrett Smetana also recorded his first hit of the season, entering the game as a sub at first base.
The Flashes and 49ers are scheduled to close out the three-game series at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 3 at Hayes Stadium.
