ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Kent State softball team (6-14) was swept in a road doubleheader against #25 Michigan (15-10) to wrap-up weekend non-conference action. The Golden Flashes fell 18-1 in the first game before putting up a fight in the second game in an eventual 8-1 defeat.
Game 1: #25 Michigan 18, Kent State 1 (5 innings)
Kent State was able to put a pair of runners on in the first inning against NFCA All-American pitcher Meghan Beaubien on back-to-back one out singles from Kaitlyn Miller and Bailey Brownfield. However, the Golden Flashes were unable to score the opening run as both were left on base.
The Michigan bats jumped out to an early lead and put its first six batters on base in a monstrous 10-run frame. That was all the Michigan offense needed as they coasted to the run-rule victory. Lexie Blair and Natalie Peters combined to drive in 10 runs from the heart of the lineup. Free bases really hurt the Flashes as Michigan put 10 via a walk, hit by pitch or error.
Andrea Scali (6-5) took the loss as she started and only faced the first four batters. Kent State utilized it's pen of Madi Huck, Anilese Kelly and Brenna Brownfield to finish out the game.
Michigan's Meghan Beaubein (8-3) pitched the first three innings and allowed three hits with five strikeouts. Sarah Schaefer threw the final two innings.
Game 2: #25 Michigan 8, Kent State 1
The Flashes struck first in the nightcap with a run scoring second stanza. Carlee Selle singled and pinch runner Brooklyn Whitt was called upon to run. Maria Cegledy singled and Brenna Brownfield drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Scali, the pitcher, hit for herself and clubbed a high sacrifice fly to center to plate Whitt.
Scali was able to work around some traffic in the first three innings inside the circle and left five on base while striking out four. In the fourth, free runners cost KSU as a SAC fly after a throwing error scored the first run, which was followed up by a walk and a two RBI single to push the Wolverines on top.
Bailey Brownfield, who put good swings on the ball all day, bounced a seeing-eye single through the middle of the diamond with one out in the sixth. With two down Hunter Brancifort singled to the left side and Maria Cegledy wore a hit by pitch to load the bases. Michigan went to its ace Beaubien out of the pen to end the scoring threat.
Michigan posted a crooked number in the sixth, as it plated five runs on two solo homers and a three-run shot.
Scali (6-6) went the distance and allowed seven walks with seven strikeouts while surrendering nine hits. Michigan's Alex Storako (6-6) went 5.2 innings with four hits allowed and walked two while punching out six.
