KENT, Ohio- The No. 10 Kent State Women's golf team will begin its quest for a 21st-straight Mid-American Conference Championship this weekend at the 2019 MAC Women's Golf Championship, hosted by Central Michigan. The event will take place at the Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.
The championship features 54 holes of competition with 18 holes played each day. Teams will tee off each day on the first and 10th hole at 9 a.m.
There are few teams that can boast the consistent success of what the Kent State women's golf team has done, as the team has shown since its creation. Since 1999, there has only been one team to win the MAC Championship every year- Kent State. The Golden Flashes have never lost a conference championship and will be a favorite to take number 21, the longest streak ever for any sport.
The Flashes have been phenomenal all season long. Kent State opened the 2018-19 campaign with two win and two runner-up finishes in the fall and added three victories in the spring. The Flashes finished outside the top three only once through 10 tournaments, and are coming off a victory last weekend at the Lady Buckeye Invitational that capped off the regular season.
"I have definitely been very happy with our performance," said head coach Greg Robertson. "This team has been the most consistent and most certainly as a whole from the first tournament."
Winning the 21st-straight title will not be taken for granted. Toledo comes in as the second-highest nationally ranked team in the MAC, followed by Northern Illinois.
Kent State will bring some familiar faces to the MAC Championship with a similar lineup to last years. Competing this weekend will be senior Michaela Finn, juniors Pimnipa Panthong and Karoline Stormo, and sophomore Chloe Salort. Freshman Thitapa Pakdeesettakul will round out the Flashes' lineup and make her first post-season appearance.
Leading the team this season has been Stormo who has won three events and finished 14th or better in eight consecutive tournaments. Also, key contributors to the Flashes' success are Panthong and Stormo. Panthong finished the regular season with five top-10 finishes. Finn had a great fall season and won the Illini Invitational and finished in the top-10 in all four tournaments.
Last season, the Flashes claimed the crown by 57 shots, a MAC record. Panthong shot 8-under par to win the tourney, while teammate Finn was runner-up at 2-under.
