AURORA, Ohio- The Kent State men's golf team put together a strong second round that tied the Flashes for the lead. Eastern Michigan held a six-stroke lead after round one, but the Flashes rallied to fire a 7-under 281 that closed the Eagles' gap on the par-72, 7,202-yard Club Walden.
"We showed a lot of character in the second round," said head coach Herb Page. "We were quite a bit behind and just kept plugging away. Something we've been looking for all year and it hasn't been there. I think the nicest thing I saw was that everybody was in the ballpark. They all were 70 and 71 and we played great. So, everybody picked each other up. Our back was against the wall, we may not even play tomorrow, so every team knew that whoever is in the lead has a shot [at winning it all]."
All five of Kent State's golfers shot an under-par score for their second round with four players in the top-10, led by Gisli Sveinbergsson. Sveinbergsson mirrored his first round total of 1-under in the second round and sits second at 2-under 142.
Will Kurtz is tied for third with an even-par 144 after he fired a 1-under 71 in the second round. Kurtz birdied on six holes in round two and leads the tournament with 10 birdies through 36-holes.
Bjarki Petursson and Chris Doody are both tied for ninth at 4-over 148 for the tournament. Petursson went 17 holes for par or better with three birdies for a 2-under 70 score. Doody also carded a 2-under 70 score with the help of four birdies. The junior birdied on three-straight holes before he birdied on the par-4 No. 12 hole.
Josh Gilkison was subbed into the second round and carded a bogey-free 2-under 70 score. Gilkison birdied his first hole and the sixth hole before finishing the round with 11-straight pars.
Kent State heads into the final round tomorrow with 16-strokes separating Toledo (597) from gaining the top spot. The rest of the field follows with Akron (598), Bowling Green (602), Ohio (603), Miami (603), Ball State (604), and Northern Illinois (609).
The final round of the MAC Championships is set to begin on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Kent State is paired with Eastern Michigan and Toledo and will tee off the first hole at 9:20 a.m. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
