5/22/2019 1:24:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field
Kent State will have 12 track and field student-athletes in action this weekend (May 23-25) at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Championships, which is being held in Jacksonville, Florida.
The top 48 declared student-athletes in each individual event will compete in the meet, which will take place at USF Track and Field Stadium. The top 12 performers from each preliminary site will advance to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
Redshirt junior TJ Lawson has already qualified to compete in the decathlon for the third year in a row. Ranks fifth in the nation with a school-record 7,876 points at the Tennessee Relays last month.
Sophomore Grace Tennant will make program history as the first Golden Flash to qualify for the preliminary round in three individual events. Tennant will be in action all three days and is slated to compete in the javelin throw on Thursday, discus throw on Friday and shot put on Saturday. Freshman Gabby Bailey will join her in the discus and shot put.
Nicole Yeargin is the third Kent State athlete who is entered in multiple events. In addition to her second straight appearance in the 200-meter dash, Yeargin also qualified for the 400-meter dash.
The Flashes will have four members of the men's squad competing in jumping events — junior Christian Champen (pole vault), senior Samory Fraga (long jump), sophomore Anthony Milliner (triple jump) and senior Craig Stevens, Jr. (triple jump) — and three competitors in throwing events — redshirt sophomore Ryan Demaline (shot put), redshirt junior Trevor Detillion (discus) and sophomore Jake Wickey (hammer throw). Senior Talia Falco and sophomore Alyssa Matheny will round out the group of competitors in the women's high jump.
