Bahr Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List For Third Consecutive Season

Fort Walton Beach, Fla. – Kent State graduate student linebacker Matt Bahr is the only student-athlete making his third straight appearance The Wuerffel Trophy Watch List in 2019.
There are 91 total nominees, and Bahr is one of 10 returners from the 2018 season watch list.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Bahr has volunteered for numerous local causes and spent more than a week in Costa Rica this past winter in Kent State's collaboration with Courts for Kids. In 2017, he spent eight days in Belize with Kent State's Courts for Kids as well. In 2018, he was nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. Bahr also served as president of Kent State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a member of the MAC's Student-Athlete Executive Committee.
In March of 2018, Bahr was awarded a postgraduate scholarship by the Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation. He also spoke on behalf of all Postgraduate Award winners at the 30th Annual Mike Cleary Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet.
During the 2018 season, Bahr was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team and the Academic All-MAC team.
Bahr has established himself as a leader on the field, in the classroom and in the community. The former walk-on was granted a sixth year for the 2019 season. During the 2018 season, Bahr tied for the team lead with 91 tackles and led the Golden Flashes with 7.5 tackles for loss.
Bahr is a three-time Mid-American Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and earned the team's Leo Strang Award for the highest grade point average among upperclassmen. At the conclusion of the 2018 spring season, he was one of two players presented with a single-digit jersey.
Kent State kicks off its season on Aug. 29, at Arizona State with its home opener to follow on Sept. 7 against Kennesaw State.
