
Flashes Beat Ohio in MAC Opener

KENT, Ohio- In its first Mid-American Conference match of the year, Kent State's (5-5, 1-0) offensive efforts led the Flashes in the 5-1 victory over Ohio (4-3, 1-2) on Saturday at Murphy-Mellis Field.
The Flashes outshot the Bobcats 28-10 with 13 shots on target tor Ohio's seven.
It didn't take long for the Flashes' offense to start attacking as sophomore Luisa Knapp scored the opening goal from a long outlet pass from Ashley Bonetz within the first three minutes of the game. Four minutes later, Clara Rodriguez Seto scored her sixth-goal of the season that put Kent State ahead, 2-0. Rodriguez Seto's goal came from a give and go from Laila Richter off a penalty corner.
Ohio's only goal came in the 11th-minute of the first period.
Eight minutes into the second period, Knapp extended the Flashes' lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal off a rebound. The goal was Knapp's second of the game and her fifth of the season.
Kent State's offensive added two more goals in the fourth period that put the game out of reach. Sydney Carr scored her first goal of the season off a deflection from the goalie. With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Richter assisted her second goal of the game to Ashley Bonetz for her second goal of the season. Kent State would secure the 5-1 victory.
Senior Mary Crumlish (1-1) got the start and win. Azure Fernsler started the second half of the game and recorded five saves.
Richter paced the Flashes with eight shots and two assists, while Knapp had a two-goal game on four shots.
Kent State is back on the road and travels to Muncie, Ind. on Friday, Oct. 4 to take on Ball State at 3 p.m.
