KENT, Ohio โ Kent State's strong offensive performance was not enough in a 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 24-26) loss to Bowling Green onย Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (7-7, 0-2 MAC) posted a .333 hitting percentage, which is the second-best this season and the second highest by a Falcon opponent. Kent State hit above the .400 mark in multiple sets for the first time this year. However, Bowling Green (8-6, 2-0 MAC) was able to hit at a .375 clip and exit the M.A.C. Center with a victory.
"I think we played two really strong matches against two of the better teams in the conference this weekend," head coach Don Gromala said. "Both teams in tonight's match are really good defensively, so it was surprising to see both hitting high percentages. Bowling Green did a really nice job of doing some different things offensively, so we were a little off-balance on defense. Our offensive play was great tonight, but we have to be better with our block and floor defense."
Senior Ashley Makruski led the way with nine kills on 25 errorless swings for a .360 hitting percentage. Freshman Savannah Matthews also totaled nine kills. Sophomore Melissa Kolurbasi hit .400 with eight kills at the pin. Sophomore Danie Tyson and senior Myla King provided efficient production in the middle for the Flashes. Tyson had eight kills and a .583 hitting percentage, while King added five kills and a .714 hitting percentage.
Junior Natalie Tagala and redshirt sophomore Alex Haffner both had 19 assists.
Sophomore Erin Gardner led the defense with 11 digs. Tagala was right behind with nine digs and freshman Carissa Reyes added eight.
Kent State concludes its four-match homestand with the annual Dig for the Cure match against Ohio on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m.
