TOLEDO, Ohio – Kent State was unable to hold its three-point halftime lead on the road, as host Toledo attempted five more free throws than field goals during the final 20 minutes to get a 69-60 victory Saturday afternoon inside Savage Arena.
The Golden Flashes (11-8, 4-4 MAC) committed a season-best seven turnovers and scored 32 points on 39 shots in the paint during the contest but the Rockets were awarded 32 free throws compared to seven for the Flashes. Toledo made 26 of those attempts for an 81.3-percent conversion rate.
The Rockets scored in the closing moments in each of the first three quarters, with Nakiah Black's three-pointer capping a 9-2 run to end the third and extend it to 50-42.
Despite being limited to 25 minutes of action with foul trouble, freshman Nila Blackford led Kent State with 14 points and nine rebounds. Classmate Katie Shumate shot 3-of-4 from long range and had 13 points. Redshirt senior Megan Carter was right behind with 12 points.
The Flashes will return to the M.A.C. Center on Wednesday to host Bowling Green in a 7 p.m. contest.
