KENT, Ohio – Megan Carter had 21 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double as Kent State defeated Miami, 80-75, on Senior Day Saturday afternoon inside of the M.A.C. Center.
The visiting RedHawks took their first lead of the day, 75-74, on a Peyton Scott jumper in the lane with 1:14 to play, but the Golden Flashes (15-10, 8-6) scored the final six points to complete a season sweep of Miami.
Sophomore Lindsey Thall put Kent State right back in the lead with a pair of free throws after being fouled on a drive to the lane with 48.3 seconds on the clock. After getting a stop on defense, sophomore Asiah Dingle was fouled and split a pair of free throws with 24.2 remaining. Now leading by two, the Flashes forced a contested turnaround three-point attempt that landed out of bounds. Dingle split another pair from the charity stripe to keep it a one-possession game, and Miami took timeout to advance the ball into the frontcourt with 7.8 seconds to play. Following the timeout, sophomore Hannah Young got a good closeout to contest a three-point attempt by Lauren Dickerson, who scored 12 of her game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter. Dickerson's shot was off the mark and rebound by Dingle, who sank two more free throws.
Kent State shot 28-for-46 overall at the foul line in the game but went just 9-of-21 over the final 11 minutes to allow the RedHawks to stay in the game.
Although the Flashes have two home games remaining, Carter played as if it were her final at the M.A.C. Center. The redshirt senior posted her first 20-point performance since the conference opener at Ball State while grabbing a career-best 10 boards and handing out a season-best five assists. Senior Sydney Brinlee made the first start of her Kent State career and grabbed two rebounds in nine minutes of action. Senior Ali Poole, who had the played since leaving the game against Western Michigan on January 11, was also in the starting lineup. Poole received a pass after the Flashes got the opening tip and handed the ball to head coach Todd Starkey before exiting for the final time to a round of applause from an appreciative crowd.
Lindsey Thall showcased her improved offensive versatility and scored 20 points despite making just one three-pointer. Freshman Katie Shumate had an efficient 18 points on only 10 field goal attempts, while Asiah Dingle scored all but one of her 12 points after halftime.
Hannah Young continued to excel in a starting role with a career-best nine rebounds to lead Kent State.
The Flashes will look for their second straight Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge sweep on Wednesday, February 26 when Akron visits the M.A.C. Center.
