
Errors Lead to 3-2 Loss at Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio – After battling back to force a decisive fifth set, the Kent State volleyball team committed too many unforced errors and lost on the road to Ohio, 3-2, (21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 11-15) on Wednesday evening.
The Golden Flashes (9-12, 4-5 MAC) had a balanced attack with four recording double-digit kills. Senior Melissa Kolurbasi and junior Savannah Matthews had 13 kills each, while junior Morgan Copley and senior Danie Tyson added 12 kills apiece. Redshirt senior Alex Haffner finished with 48 assists and a season-high seven kills.
Senior Erin Gardner was terrific in the back row with a season-high 32 digs. Freshman Kiersten Kraus tallied a career-high 14 digs and sophomore Bryn Roberts added 13.
A slow start saw Kent State fall behind 6-2 in the opening set before surging back to take a 15-13 lead. A kill by Alex Haffner evened it at 21-21, but the Bobcats captured four of the next five points to win the set.
The Flashes fell behind 3-0 in the second set and took its first lead on 22-21 on an Ohio attack error, part of a 5-0 run to tie the match.
Kent State posted a .323 hitting percentage in the third set, but the Bobcats hit at a blistering .516 clip to win the third set, 25-17.
Tied 17-17 in the fourth, the Flashes used a 6-0 run to take control before closing it out with a kill by Danie Tyson.
Tyson started the fifth set with a kill, putting away an overpass for a 1-0 lead. The teams traded the first eight points, and it was tied 7-7 before Ohio scored four in a row. Kent State was able to cut the deficit to two twice but fell 15-11.
The Flashes will be back in action at the M.A.C. Center this weekend against Buffalo. Friday's 'Dig for the Cure' match will begin at 6 p.m. and Saturday's match is scheduled for 4 p.m. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN3.
