BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Kent State fifth year Azure Fernsler has been named to the 2021 NFHCA Division I Senior Team, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced Monday.
The selected student-athletes were nominated by their NFHCA member coach and were chosen based on their career accomplishments.
Fernsler's goalkeeping led the Flashes to 11 wins this Fall as opposed to just six losses in the 17 games she started. She allowed more than two goals in a game only three times all year and helped secure two shutouts for Kent State, one solo and one combined. Her stellar play earned her two Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors, an NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week honor, and MAC Defensive Player of the Year honors as well. A highlight of Fernsler's season included shutting down No. 9 Liberty's top ranked offense recording a season and career high 17 saves. Fernsler finished the season leading the MAC in saves (96) and save percentage (0.793%).
Unfortunately, the in-person 2021 NFHCA Senior Game was cancelled due to limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
