KENT, Ohio – The Kent State Field Hockey team fell 1-4 against Ohio State on the regular season home finale on Sunday afternoon.
The game was also Senior Day as the six seniors in the Golden Flashes' 2026 class were honored before the game. Maybritt Duwel, Ashlyn Taylor, Sophia Livingston, Eva Usoz, Lauren Conroy and Michaela Skinner have all made a tremendous impact on the Kent State Field Hockey program in their careers and they all got the start against the Buckeyes on Sunday.
As of Sunday, Oct. 25, the 2026 senior class has a combined 31 overall wins and 22 MAC victories. Offensively, the class has scored 55 goals, dished 25 assists, and tallied 135 points, 331 shots, and 188 shots on goal. The class has been selected to a combined two MAC All-Freshman Teams and two All-MAC teams. They've also won a combined two MAC Offensive Player of the Week awards, two MAC Goalkeeper of the Week awards, and a MAC Freshman of the Year award.
Perhaps most impressively, off the field, every senior that has been at Kent State for four or more years has made the Academic All-MAC Team. Every four-year senior has also made two MAC Tournaments with Kent State. Meanwhile, fifth-year senior Lauren Conroy has been a part of three MAC-Tournament squads.
The seniors shined in the game against Ohio State as Eva Usoz led the team with four shots, Michaela Skinner had eight saves, and Maybritt Duwel scored the lone goal for the Golden Flashes.
The game started off with a barrage of Buckeyes' penalty corners as Ohio State had three opportunities within the first four minutes, all of which were turned away by Michaela Skinner and the Kent State defense.
However, the fourth penalty corner of the first corner resulted in Ohio State getting on the scoreboard as Phillippa Jowett connected with the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Carmela Maro and Katie Crump were each credited with their second assists of the year as Ohio State took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter, and eventually into the second half.
The momentum turned in favor of Kent State in the middle of the third quarter when Addie Gagnon weaved through the Ohio State back line, crossing the ball to Maybritt Duwel who then scored in the left side of the goal. Duwel is now second on the team with points as she has two goals and three assists on the year.
Almost immediately after Duwel's goal, the Buckeyes had four consecutive penalty corner attempts turned away by Michaela Skinner. Murphy-Mellis Field was electric as Kent State's defense was holding strong to keep the game tied at one apiece heading into the fourth quarter against the tough Ohio State offense.
The Golden Flashes had their best chances to score in the final frame early on as Kent State took four shots on goal in the first minute of action. After that, however, it was all Ohio State as the Buckeyes tallied three goals and five more penalty corner opportunities over the next 19 minutes of play.
The relentless effort of Kent State was still on full display in the fourth quarter, but the size and speed of Ohio State was evident as the Buckeyes took control late in the game to come away with the 4-1 victory.
