KENT, Ohio – The Kent State Field Hockey team is preparing to play Miami (OH) and Ohio State in the penultimate week of the regular season.
The Golden Flashes can clinch a spot in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament with a victory over the RedHawks on Friday. If Kent State falls to Miami (OH), they still have a chance to make the postseason with a win over Ohio or some help from other teams if Kent State goes winless.
While the Ohio State game doesn't have any postseason implications for Kent State, a victory could provide some helpful positive momentum going into the final regular season game against Ohio.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes split the weekend series with Longwood and App State, defeating the Lancers 4-1 and falling 2-3 in overtime to the Mountaineers. The Longwood victory catapulted Kent State into postseason contention with goals by Ryli Zee, Torie Del Collo, Eva Usoz and Addie Gagnon. The Golden Flashes also tallied three assists in the win from Maybritt Duwel, Eva Usoz and Emily Robertson. Kent State posted their best statistical offensive performance of the year against Longwood, outshooting the Lancers 41-7 with a 29-5 shots on goal advantage.
The game against App State was one of the most thrilling games of the year, with a palpable playoff atmosphere inside Murphy-Mellis Field. The Mountaineers held a 1-0 lead heading into halftime before Kent State's Alexa Knott tied the game with her first goal as a member of the Golden Flashes. Eva Usoz tallied her 9th goal of the year just eight minutes later to give Kent State a 2-1 lead heading into the final minutes. Despite holding a late-game lead, Sophia Baxter tied the game for App State with two minutes remaining, and then Brynn Shaffer won the game for the Mountaineers in overtime.
Miami (OH) Scouting Report
The RedHawks have a 10-4 overall record and have only lost to UMass in the MAC so far. Miami (OH) surged to the No. 11-ranked spot nationally after defeating Ball State 10-0 last Sunday and Bellarmine 6-1 last Friday. The RedHawks have been on fire both offensively and defensively as of late, outscoring opponents 31-1 since falling to UMass at the beginning of the month. Sloane Wearren, Justina Intzes, and Malena Sabez each had multi-goal games against Ball State and have been some of the most productive players on the team. Intzes and Sabez each have over 10 goals on the year, while Wearren has seven goals and four assists.
Ohio State Scouting Report
The Buckeyes have a 4-10 record overall and are on an eight-game losing streak, getting outscored 11-28 over the last month and a half. Ohio State has had an extremely tough schedule this year, playing seven different ranked opponents so far with a 1-7 record against them. Ohio State takes on the other team in the BIG-10 with a winless conference record, Michigan State, on Friday, before traveling to Kent to take on the Golden Flashes. Sienna Golden is the leading scorer for the Buckeyes with seven goals. Victoria Kutz leads the team with five assists.
Series History
Kent State has an extensive history with conference foe Miami (OH) with a 12-16 overall record dating back to 2009. Despite the fairly even record historically, Kent State has struggled as of late against the RedHawks, losing seven out of their last 10 matchups. The Golden Flashes have also played Ohio State as a non-conference matchup a lot over the years, compiling a 3-13 overall record against the Buckeyes.
Up Next
Kent State takes on Ohio in the final game of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 30 on the road. The MAC Tournament takes place in Oxford, Ohio from Wednesday, Nov. 4 through Saturday, Nov. 7. The Golden Flashes still await their postseason fate.
